Hasui's Landscapes

This fresh and vibrant Japanese landscape is the work of Kawase Hasui.

At the end of the Meiji period, when ukiyo-e was in decline, he became the standard-bearer for its revival, and his efforts established a new form of expression known as shin-hanga.

While incorporating modern, photographic compositions and shading, the colors and precise lines follow the traditional methods of expression of ukiyo-e.

It is more popular overseas than in Japan, and even Steve Jobs was fascinated by it.

Hasui's works are gradually gaining popularity.

I think that from a modern perspective, it is easier to relate to as a representation of Japan's mental landscape than the ukiyo-e prints of the past.
